Potentially Great Video Games in 2015: Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

This is the first of a series of games that comes out this year that I will be buying and I believe are worth checking out. In this and future posts I will explain why I believe this will be a good, what to expect from it, and include some reasons why it might or might not appeal to you.

The Last of Us Remastered an graphically upgraded port of a PS3 only game that was under two years old managed to be the 9th highest selling PS4 game. On the Xbox One a game that combines four graphically upgraded ports from the Halo series featuring Xbox and Xbox 360 games known as Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the 8th highest selling Xbox One game. When 2K Games announced Borderlands: The Handsome Collection was coming out on PS4 and Xbox One, no one should have been surprised. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection features Borderlands 2 and Borderlands The Pre-Sequel two games that came out on the PS3 and Xbox 360 that features all of the downloadable content that was sold separately included for free. Personally Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is one of the top games I am looking forward to in 2015 and below are the reasons it will be a good or bad game for you.

When I rented Borderlands 2 I did not expect to like it. I thought it was a generic first person shooter that only had the ability to play four player co-op with friends as its main appeal. After playing Borderlands 2 I realized it a unique combination of a role playing game and first person shooter. The Borderlands franchise is probably more role playing game than first person, because upgrading your character’s powers and choosing weapons with different elemental abilities matter more than good aim and staying in cover, so people that love first person shooters and do not care for role playing games will be disappointed. The Borderlands franchise also does not feature a real player versus player mode, but does allow you to challenge your friends to a duel, which is a quick unranked fight with nothing at stake. While I and many people that upgraded from Xbox 360 and PS3 to Xbox One and PS4 never played Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel due to it coming out after the Xbox One and PS4 were in stores and was unplayable on those consoles, Borderlands 2 was the best co-op game I played on last generation of consoles. It was a massively multiplayer online game experience that could be played offline, without a monthly fee, and you could get a complete experience without playing for DLC. While more games are going for co-op experiences, most allow only two people to play a co-op campaign that at is similar to the single player campaign or use a separate game mode with no story where you fight wave after wave of enemies. Being able to play story missions and side quests with friends while using your own character that fits your play unique style is something I think only Borderlands, Destiny, and Diablo III give you on the PS4 or Xbox One.

While buying a game that has already been out on last generation consoles are not sexiest thing to buy for a newish console, I believe Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is one of the best experiences you can have.
